WORKSHOP ON “CORPORATE PERSONALITY” BY MR. CHANAKA DE SILVA
On January 10, 2025, the Department of Commerce conducted an engaging workshop for its 4th-year students on the topic of “Corporate Personality.” The event was held at the Department of Commerce premises and featured Mr. Chanaka de Silva, a distinguished President’s Counsel in Sri Lanka, renowned for his expertise in corporate law, project finance, and legal frameworks governing infrastructure projects.
Mr. de Silva provided valuable insights into fundamental legal concepts rooted in Sri Lankan law, including:
- Royal Chamber: The historical significance of the Royal Chamber and its influence on the development of corporate and institutional structures within Sri Lanka.
- Acts of Parliament: The role of the Sri Lankan Parliament in creating and amending laws, with a focus on their impact on corporate governance and regulatory compliance.
- Elements of a Contract under Sri Lankan Law: The essential components of a valid contract, including offer, acceptance, consideration, and the intention to create legal obligations, drawing from Roman-Dutch law and statutory provisions applicable in Sri Lanka.
The workshop was an enriching experience, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of these critical legal principles and their practical applications within Sri Lanka’s business landscape. Mr. de Silva’s expertise and engaging presentation ensured that participants gained valuable knowledge relevant to their academic and future professional endeavors.
